SAWA Works with Men to Stop Violence against Women

Ramallah—Maan—SAWA association completed the first stage of a project that will be implanted for two years throughout a training course, in a participation of 15 people in the Palestinian Red Crescent hall in Ramallah. The stage was about 7 days as a group of men were trained to work with other men to stop violence against women.

" Women and men to stop violence" project will be implemented in Hebron district in a partnership with five civil non-governmental and local associations in Hebron which are; Sharek Youth Forum, Roles for Social Change Association (ADWAR),Partners for Sustainable Development (PSD), Dora Youth Club and Global Vision association. Each of these associations chose volunteers to participate in the training course as it is a part of regional project that includes Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt.   

New methods will be used throughout the project to stop violence against women in order to enhance and completes the feminist organizations that work for women to stop violence against them by using a practical examples that show that a man is a real partner of a women who helps to change as he is a part of a problem and a resolution at the same time.

Throughout the first stage, the training focused on what men can do to stop violence against women at individual, family and the association levels. Also, the training focused on partnerships' methods and was of coalition to target four groups in the society which are; clergy, lawyers, judges and policemen and local elected leaders as they affect society significantly.

Aheila Shomar, SAWA society director, confirmed on the importance to work, especially, with men to stop violence against women, as she thanked also the trainees for their trust. In addition, she noted that the responsibility after training is greater as work will be for two years whereas the project will target a large number of men.

Jalal Khadir, the society legal consultant, appreciated youth leaders' roles in making positive change in the society confirming on the importance of sustain and cooperation to face difficulties that may face trainees while the work on raising awareness to stop the inherited violence because of many social and educational factors; whereas men, based on gender, can do great work in this field in cooperation with men.

At the end, the trainees were given certificates and informed about the second stage.
