“My Right” program and the episode title “Rights and laws related to marriage and divorce in Palestine”

Roles for social change Association-ADWAR, in cooperation with Radio Marah, conducted the third episode of “My Right” program that was within the project entitled “Protecting Women’s Legal Rights”; within the framework of its social program strategies aimed at helping and protecting women’s legal rights and reducing gender-based violence.

This episode was specified to discuss women’s rights regarding marriage and divorce, by hosting family court’s judge Abdullah Asaily, and the Legal Consultant Alaa Maraqa, in addition to Mrs. Fadia Zahida who has been through experience regarding divorce; and that was in order to discuss women’s full rights in marriage and divorce and their consequent legal consequences.

In the meeting’s beginning, Abdullah Asaily talked about general marriage definition in our society from a legal point and the most important consequences based on marriage contract that must be followed and adhered by both parties referring to traditional society customs in marriage.

During the meeting, Asaily reviewed the most important rights and obligations of both spouses and when the woman has the right to claim her right when she’s in her husband’s house in case of any breach that has not been agreed upon in the marriage contract such as education, work, … etc.

The legal consultant Alaa Marqa talked about the most prominent international conventions that called for non-discrimination between men and women, and how we should treat them fairly regardless of their social state, as well as enabling them socially and economically in their society.

In this turn, Fadia Zahida talked about her experience of separation and the obstacles and challenges she faced from the external environment and how she worked hard to raise her spirits by talking about her willingness to stand up against society’s negative view toward divorced women to reflect another image of Palestinian woman by proving their will and determination that they are capable of being effective in their community.
