Roles for Social Change Association(ADWAR ) Ends Media Community , Awareness Campaign to Encourage  Women to demand  their Right to Inheritance

In partnership with YMCA and funding by the European Union, Roles association ended the media community campaign to enhance women right to inheritance, with a YMCA “Women right to inheritance” project.
The campaign took about two months (November – December /2012) in Hebron City. It is important as it focused on different reasons which prevented women from getting their right to inheritance; even there were few women who got their inheritance right, but it was not based on religious roles.
The campaign was justified as there were a lot of women whom were prevented from getting their right to inheritance for various reasons such as; woman personal injustice because she are not aware of their religious and legal rights as she refuses to demand her family for her rights.
The other reasons Also are the militant and conservative masculine mentality which prevents women from getting their right to inheritance, the traditional stereotype toward women’s roles like a housewife or a pregnant and the traditional social stereotype which enhances the traditional role of women as she plays a victim and generous roles. The campaign targeted to raise women awareness in Hebron City about the importance of breaking their fear and silence barriers to enhance them to demand for their right to inheritance and to raise the society’s awareness in Hebron toward confirming on the women right to inheritance and its positive effects to women and family in general. Also, it aimed to raise men’s awareness toward changing their positions in giving women their right to inheritance, and receiving their support and advocacy to demand for this right.
The campaign has achieved its results by activities, such as four radio episodes aimed to raise awareness about social, religious and legal rights related to women right to inheritance in Hebron radios. Also, there were two T.V episodes aimed to raise awareness about legal, religious and social rights of the inheritance.
In addition to five seminar sessions which targeted more than 100 trainees from Hebron. They were aware about the importance of encouraging women to demand for their right to inheritance. There were also five caricatures and more than 1000 flyers which were distributed to more than 1000 persons from Hebron. These flyers aimed to deliver message to women in order to break fear and silence barriers and enhance them to demand for their right to inheritance; and change men culture toward this right.
The campaign achieved raising awareness by Roles’ Association  staff who communicated with many persons from Hebron. All of them confirmed on the campaign’s message of enhancing women right to inheritance; which was raised.
In reality, many women visited Roles association and called a lot of local radios. As there were many calls to Maan T.V by women who inquired about what to do in order to get their right to inheritance.
In addition, there were a lot of women who inquired about what to do after signing on documents as they were persuaded that they have completely got their legitimate right; as it appeared by SMS in radio and T.V episodes.
Juana Rafeidi, women right to inheritance’s project coordinator in YMCA, said that “this is one of the nine campaigns which were implemented by YMCA included “women right to inheritance” project”
“The campaigns focused on the importance of enhancing the local society to adopt this issue in order to achieve justice for women, and what makes the “to break fear and silence barriers” campaign different was the ability to represent media in adopting women and supporting their right to inheritance”, Rafeidi added.
Sahar Alkawasmeh, Roles Association general director, confirmed on the campaign’s great results as it helped raising the social, legal and religious awareness as it targeted Hebron.“ It came as a feedback from West Bank provinces which confirmed on the awareness ratio which raised in social, legal and religious levels and all the campaign’s message were sent to all people”, Alkawasmeh said.
